I read this chapter in early May. By late May the video of George Floyd being murdered by police had been shown across most if not all news platforms. Protestors took to the streets. Demand #JusticeforBre trended and at least thirteen more Black lives have been taken by police since then.

I kept feeling conflicted by the words in this chapter, specifically, “let your child fail” and “encourage healthy risk taking.” Black and Brown kids don’t have the same privilege to make mistakes. Their mistakes usually define who they are and often defines students who look like them, too. I see it everyday in education.
